ShiftsPod  /  Walkaround checks

The walkaround check app
that stands up to an audit

Drivers complete a DVSA-aligned check of the vehicle and trailer on their phone before they depart. Defects are photographed, dangerous ones raise a do-not-drive warning, and the office has a register that stays open until each fault is fixed.

In short

What it is, in two sentences.

ShiftsPod is a daily walkaround check app for HGV drivers, aligned with DVSA guidance. The driver checks the vehicle and each trailer on their phone, photographs any defect, and cannot depart until the check is complete.

The office gets a defect register, a printable report for every check and a view of how long each driver really spends checking. It costs £14 per driver a month with tracking and proof of delivery included.

For the driver

A check that takes minutes, not paperwork.

Vehicle first, then each trailer

One checklist for the unit and one for every trailer, with each item marked pass, fail or N/A.

Photo and note on any defect

A failed item is photographed and described before the driver can continue, so the workshop sees the fault rather than a tick in a box.

Do not drive, in plain words

When a dangerous defect is found the app says so, and records whether the driver acknowledged it.

Trailer swap mid-shift

Picking up a different trailer means a fresh trailer check, logged against that trailer.

Known defects carried forward

An open defect is shown to the next driver before they leave the yard. It keeps appearing until it is fixed.

Works with no signal

The check is saved on the phone and uploaded when coverage returns.

For the office

Records you can put in front of an examiner.

Straight answers

What “DVSA-aligned” means here.

What we mean

  • The checklist follows the items in DVSA's walkaround check guidance for HGVs
  • Defects are recorded in writing, with who found them and when
  • Dangerous defects are separated from minor ones
  • Records are kept until you delete them. DVSA guidance asks operators to keep them for at least 15 months

What we don't claim

  • ShiftsPod is not approved or endorsed by DVSA
  • An app does not make a vehicle roadworthy. The driver and the operator still do
  • It does not replace safety inspections or your maintenance provider
  • It does not download or analyse tachograph data
FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is ShiftsPod approved by DVSA?

No. The checks are aligned with DVSA's published walkaround guidance for HGV drivers, but ShiftsPod is not approved or endorsed by DVSA.

What happens when a driver finds a dangerous defect?

The app shows a do-not-drive warning and records whether the driver acknowledged it. The defect appears on the office dashboard with its photo, and the daily report carries the verdict at the top of the page.

Does it cover trailers as well as the vehicle?

Yes. The driver checks the vehicle and then each trailer, including a trailer picked up part-way through the shift. Defects are logged per trailer.

Can a driver skip the check?

No. The check has to be completed before the driver can depart on a shift.

How long are check records kept?

Two years by default, which covers DVSA guidance to keep defect reports for at least 15 months. You can change the period for your company in ShiftsPod.

Can I print a check report for an audit?

Yes. Each daily check prints as a report listing every item, the time taken, the location and any defects, and the defect register prints as well.

How do I know drivers are really doing the check?

Check oversight shows the time each driver spends on a check, how many are finished in under 90 seconds, and how often every item is marked at once.

Know every truck was checked before it left.
